FAQs: Contact List

Add, modify, delete and move contacts and groups on your list

What is a contact list?

Your contact list is like an interactive address book. It’s a list of your top contacts (whether clients, colleagues, friends or whoever you choose to add), which you will always see when running the Messenger application window. It displays the contact’s name, together with a status indicator showing whether they are online and available to talk (their ‘presence state’).

Contacts on this list can be added to groups, with no maximum number of groups and up to 1000 contacts in each. However, you’ll probably get the most out of your list if you keep it shorter than that!

Likewise, you will appear on other people’s contact lists in the same way: they will be able to see if you are online and available, offline, or away from your desk.

Who can I add to my contact list?

Your contact list can contain people from any instant messaging network to which you are connected. So, you can add people from Bantu Messenger and other available networks which you have set up (e.g. MSN, ICQ, Yahoo).

How do I add people to my contact list?

Click ‘add contact’ from the Messenger application window window. If you know the username of the person you wish to add, you can just type this into the box.

If you are not sure what their username is, or prefer to browse for the person, you can click the ‘search directory’ link, locate them in the directory and then click the ‘add to contact list’ button next to their name.

Can I rename a contact?

By default, your contact’s name appears as it is stored on the network that they are using (e.g. Bantu Messenger users’ names will appear in full, but ICQ users appear as a number.). But if you wish you can assign them a nickname on your own contact list.

I’ve added someone to my contact list but they haven’t appeared on it yet.

If this happens, it’s likely that the other person has set up Bantu Messenger so that they have to authorise any requests to add them to other people’s contact lists. If you view your folders (in Modify Contacts), you should see a folder called Contacts Awaiting Authorization - if their name is in there, this is why they have not appeared on your list.

How do I edit or rearrange contacts and groups on my contact list?

To add, delete and sort your personal contacts and groups, click on 'Settings' from the Messenger application window, and select 'Contact List' then 'Modify Your Online Contacts and Groups'. Select the group you wish to modify (or the group containing the users you wish to modify), and choose:

  • edit to edit the group or contacts which it contains
  • rename to rename the group OR
  • delete to delete the group

If you click ‘add a contact’, this will place a NEW contact in the group you have selected. If you wish to move a contact to another group, select the group in which the contact is currently placed, then click 'edit contacts', edit the contact and then assign them to another group.

NB: Shortcut to modify groups and contacts: If you hold down shift and click on a contact or group name in the contact list, you will go directly to the screen from which you can edit that contact or group.

Can I invite someone onto my list who does not have an account?

At the moment, all Bantu Messenger accounts are created by an administrator. It is not possible to invite someone to sign up who does not currently have an account.
